We loaded up five bikes on the back of the Hilux and set out to test the new bike route created from Mäntyharju to Repovesi National Park. Jockum and Jesse with cyclocross bikes, Mathias and Mika with single speed 29er’s and I rode a fatbike with 29+ wheels.
didn’t happen this time either, but no worries since it doesn’t get dark in the summer. I think we got rolling around two in the afternoon. The route followed gravel roads and smaller tracks before it cut into the woods for some nice singletrack. It had rained quite a lot so there was some nice muddy spots that required a bit of pushing.
After a few hours of riding we crossed a railway bridge.
The route offers quite many open shelters and even a pit stop that serves water or juice free of charge.
The route is technically relatively easy and suites most people with at least some mountain biking experience. There are some options to cut it short and ride gravel roads back to Mäntyharju. I would definitely recommend a mountain bike over a cyclocross bike for this route, even though it has some stretches of gravel roads especially towards the end.
I was riding the Maxxis Chronicle 29 x 3 prototype tire for the first time on this trip. Conditions varied from wet mud, to dry rock and gravel roads. They proved to be an awesome tire for all around trail and bike touring type of riding. I will write a more in depth review on them shortly.
Some hills were so steep they required a bit of a push with loaded bikes.
We stopped at Matkoslammen laavu for lunch. Very nice place.
What are these photos about? (Optional)
We rode to the National Park of Repovesi to spend the night. Checked out Olhava, which is very popular among climbers. There is also a well to fill up on water. You are only allowed to ride bikes on the service roads in the park.
We spent the night in the shelter of Kuutinkanava. We didn’t have tents with us this time, so it was a bit of a gamble if there were places free to spend the night, but we managed to fit in without a hassle.
On sunday the weather improved a lot and it was mostly sunny and warm. Started the journey back in high spirits. The cyclocross guys took the road and the rest of us rode the mtb route.
We turned up the pace a bit on day two and the riding was great. Some of the muddy spots had already dried up a bit so they didn’t slow us down that much.
The last few kilometers were a paved cycle path and we managed to score an ice cream and coffee too.
Awesome ride. Two days and 90 kilometers. They have done an amazing amount of work in the forest to make this route possible. I would highly recommend to check it out. It is only a two hour car ride to Mäntyharju from Helsinki and you can take the train too. We will do this ride again later on in the fall for sure.
